Overview of Diversity Visa lottery

No correspondence or emails will be sent to lottery winners by the Department of State! The Department of State website allows DV lottery winners to check their case status online due to an increase in fraudulent spam that claims to notify individuals of their winnings.

To process your case, you must complete it in the fiscal year indicated during the registration period. You may get a winning lottery number during the fall of 2022 if you register for “DV 2024”, and then you may apply for an immigrant visa or adjust your status.

To avoid voiding your application, your case must be properly completed by September 30, 2024.

 

Do you need a sponsor?

Diversity Visa recipients are not required to provide an Affidavit of Support, nor do they need a sponsor. The participant must have completed at least a high school diploma or equal as a condition for participation in the lottery.

They must also have at least two years of full-time work experience in a skilled trade within the last five years, requiring at least two years of training, education beyond high school, or experience in that occupation.

A participant who enters the DV Lottery more than once in the same year loses eligibility. Still, a participant who enters it once a year in their native country is eligible.

A married couple eligible for the DV Lottery in a given year but not nationals of their respective countries of birth can register together for that year’s lottery. This pertains to “cross-chargeability.”

 

Eligibility for the diversity visas

A successful application for the green card lottery requires the following:

• The applicant should have a high school diploma or equivalent or at least two years of experience in a career requiring at least two years of training and be eligible for immigration.
• Applicants for diversity visas must either be natives of one of the countries qualifying or have a spouse who is.
• INA-eligible.
• Electronically submit their application.
• The State Department notifies lottery winners after a computer randomly selects winners. To become legal permanent residents, winners must submit paperwork within a short period. The number of green cards granted to diversity visa recipients and their families in 2010 was 49,763. Half of the respondents were males, and 74 percent were 21 or older.

What are the steps for the application process for the visa lottery?

Submit an entry.

The U.S. Department of State’s website contains instructions for completing this electronically.
